Cornerstone of Topeka, Inc., is a non-profit affordable housing organization located in Topeka, Kansas. Cornerstone is dedicated to ending homelessness, and to providing decent, safe, affordable housing to low income residents of Shawnee County.

Since 1986, Cornerstone of Topeka has grown from a small transitional housing program for homeless families, to an agency offering a range of housing programs and services to low-income families and individuals.

Cornerstone of Topeka is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in good standing and registered with the office of the Kansas Secretary of State. Cornerstone is a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO), certified as such by the State of Kansas and by the City of Topeka, Kansas.

Cornerstone is a member of The Enterprise Foundation Network, Kansas Nonprofit Association, and Shawnee County Landlords Association.

Since 1986, Cornerstone of Topeka has developed (through acquisition and rehabilitation or new construction) more than 100 units of affordable housing.

Cornerstone of Topeka has a small staff, comprised of 5 or 6 full-time and 1 or 2 part time employees. In the past five years, we have also benefitted from the services of 4 Mennonite Voluntary Service workers, who work with us full-time for a year or more.

Cornerstone of Topeka has a volunteer Board of Directors. Numbering between 12 and 15 members, the Board represents a broad cross-section of the Topeka community. Present and past Board members have included accountants, property managers, librarians, social workers, real estate professionals, bankers, teachers, clergy, retirees, trades people, executives, former clients, elected officials, and neighborhood representatives. At least 1/3 of Cornerstone’s Board of Directors are people who are either low income or live in a low income neighborhood. The Board of Directors meets one evening a month, in addition to regular and ad-hoc committee meetings.

Cornerstone invites volunteerism, whether as a Board or committee member, working “hands on” with home renovation and repair, or providing educational or mentoring opportunities to our clients.
