| OUR 21st
ANNIVERSARY! |
| As of April, 2007, Cornerstone
of Topeka is 21 years old! Cornerstone was founded in 1986 by a group
of Topeka citizens concerned with the growing problem of homelessness
among working families with children. Known until 1990 as Topeka
Family Shelter, the organization began with the short-term Transitional
Housing and Education Program, providing housing and resources
to assist homeless families in getting back on their feet. In 1990,
the organization's name was changed to Cornerstone of Topeka, to reflect
a broadening mission of providing a range of affordable housing solutions
and resources to low income Topekans.
Cornerstone is unique among housing providers in offering
a continuum of services and housing options, from transitional housing
for homeless families to affordable long-term rental housing.
For more than 10 years, Cornerstone's activities included
an active program to help low income familes become home owners.
Although our focus has shifted to the need for decent, safe and
affordable rental housing, home ownership continues to be an option
for those of our tenants who wish to pursue that possibility. More
than 25 low income families have purchased their own homes through
Cornerstone's programs, and more than 2/3 of those buyers still
own their original homes.
